Rules at a Glance

Rules differ a little between leagues. Iron Link Arms events follow the rules posted for each event (see the event flyer). This page covers what almost every match shares.

The match

  1. The referee brings both competitors to the table. Elbows go on the pads, hands lock, free hands take the pegs.
  2. The referee squares the grip and checks that both are ready.
  3. The referee calls “Ready… Go.” No one moves before Go.
  4. A match ends when one competitor pins the back of the other’s hand to the pad.
  5. Big events run in best-of rounds for the main matches and double elimination for the open tournament.

Fouls

A referee will warn or penalize for:

  • Lifting the elbow off the pad
  • Letting go of the peg or grabbing the table
  • A false start before “Go”
  • Changing or slipping the grip once it is set
  • Moving in a way the referee judges unsafe

Repeated fouls can cost a match. The referee’s call is final.

Right arm, left arm

Divisions are usually split by arm. Many events charge per arm, so you can enter one or both.

Weight classes

Divisions group competitors by body weight, and many events add women’s and masters (50+) divisions. The current event flyer lists the classes for that day.

Safety comes first

Any referee may stop a match if a competitor looks hurt or in an unsafe position. If you feel pain, say “stop” right away.
